Fujitsu Produces Desktop Virtualization 'Zero Client' Monitor Fujitsu, a $47 billion IT solutions provider with 175,000 employees, has teamed up with startup Pano Logic on the "zero client" approach to desktop virtualization. It will build a monitor that contains connectors to the network, the keyboard and mouse. This approach eliminates the tiny square device that Pano normally sells. In the Pano/Fujitsu partnership, Fujitsu will produce a monitor that contains everything embedded in the monitor stand that used to be contained in the little box. While the monitor will contain connectors, there's still no processor, memory, operating system or device drivers.

Monitors Set to Challenge PCs Normally people think of their monitors as an extension of their PCs. But as desktop virtualization evolves, it is the monitor, rather than the PC, that may become the center of the end-user experience. Fujitsu has announced that it has licensed virtual desktop client software from Pano Logic, which developed a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) solution that requires no software on the client. Instead, the Pano Logic approach to VDI relies on a device that allows users to access all the software they need to run on a VMware virtual server.

For $319 or $329 a seat, Pano strips the user of 100% of his processing power leaving him with only his screen, keyboard, mouse and a little black or silver cube that connects to his virtualized Windows desktop on the server back in the company's data center. Virtualization Review

A VDI Success Story Bruce Hoard of Virtualization Review chats with Kane Edupuganti of St. Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center about the dramatic improvements in user uptime and significant decreases in desktop support calls he’s enjoyed since deploying Pano Logic throughout St. Vincent’s 42 New York City locations. "The minute we deployed the Pano Logic solution based on VMware's VDI solution, the lags went away, and within a week, medical personnel were able to catch up on almost 300 backlogs being closed in the emergency department," Edupuganti declares. "They love the performance, and they kind of actually became our marketing tool within the hospital. The word spread from the emergency department to the radiology department to the cardiology department and so on."
